Learn About Our

Adoption Process

Ready to Adopt?

  • This application will tell us about you and your lifestyle, training beliefs and background with animals.

  • One of our volunteer team members will contact you by phone to discuss your application and the pet you are interested in. They will also assess whether your expectations align with the needs of the pet.

If our team member determines that the pet is not a good fit for you or your lifestyle, or vice versa, they may suggest another pet in our program that could be a better match.

  • Our organization does not have a shelter where pets can be visited. Instead, our pets are in foster homes. However, there are opportunities to meet our pets at scheduled adoption events.

We do NOT arrange meetings with our fosters until an Adoption Application has been submitted. Once your application is received, a volunteer (usually the foster) will contact you to schedule a time to meet the pet(s) you are interested in. The meeting may take place at the foster’s home, your home, an adoption event, or another mutually agreeable location.

  • This portion of the process can take the most time. To help expedite it, please contact your references and ask them to return our calls promptly.

    • Our volunteers will reach out to your personal references to ask questions regarding your responsibility as a pet owner.

    • If you rent your home, your landlord will be contacted to confirm that you have approval to have a pet. We will also inquire about any breed or size restrictions.

    • Our volunteers will contact the veterinary reference(s) you provided to verify that all your current pets are spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations. If you do not have current pets, we will ask about the veterinary care your previous pets received. If you have never owned a pet, this step will be skipped.

  • Our organization requires home visits to ensure that the pet will be living in a safe environment. This is an informal opportunity for us to get to know you, your lifestyle, and your home environment, and to help determine which pet(s) in our program might be the best fit. A volunteer will conduct a brief walk-through of your home and yard to assess safety and provide guidance on any areas of concern.

  • Please remember, being approved as an adopter does not guarantee that you will be chosen for a specific dog. For some dogs, we receive multiple applications, and we may allow several applicants to meet the dog before selecting the home that we believe is the best fit. Additionally, if the volunteer involved in the meeting does not feel you are a good match for that particular dog, the adoption may not proceed. However, you may be considered for adopting another dog from our program.

If it is determined that the adoption should proceed, a volunteer will meet with you again to finalize the adoption of your new family member. You will be required to sign an Adoption Contract and register the dog’s microchip in your name. We will also provide copies of all veterinary paperwork we have for the dog. With your permission, a “Happy Tails” photo will be taken at that time to share on our website and social media platforms. For safety reasons, we do not post identifying information online.
