Adoption Policies & FAQs

  • Our goal is to ensure each dog finds a loving and safe “forever” home. Many of our dogs come from high-risk situations, including shelters with scheduled euthanasia. A thorough adoption process helps us make the best match for both the adopter and the dog. Since our team consists of unpaid volunteers, delays may occur, especially if references are unavailable. Your patience allows us to prioritize the dogs’ well-being.

  • Adopters must meet the following criteria:

    • Be at least 21 years old with a valid photo ID showing your current address.

    • Reside within a reasonable driving distance of Chicago, IL (we rarely adopt out of state unless the dog is in an out-of-state foster home).

    • If renting, provide documentation proving landlord approval for pet ownership. Condo and homeowner association members must provide covenants permitting dogs.

  • Yes, the safety and environment of the home are critical factors.

    • A home visit is required to assess suitability.

    • Fenced yards may be necessary for certain breeds, while electric fences are not approved.

    • Homes with balconies (in condos or apartments) are discouraged.

    • Dogs must live indoors as part of the family; we do not adopt out “outdoor dogs” or dogs intended to be kept chained outside.

  • In cases with multiple applicants, the dog will be placed in the home that best matches its needs. While we aim to notify all applicants, if you do not hear back, it likely means another family was chosen. We encourage you to apply for another dog in our program.

  • No, we do not process applications for secondary adopters. This includes adopting a dog as a gift for someone else. We believe all adopters should be directly involved in the process to ensure the best match.

  • Some adoptions may require a background check at our discretion. Additionally, we may verify your home insurance to ensure there are no breed restrictions that would affect the dog you are adopting.

At Mobile Mutts Rescue, our policies are designed with the well-being of the dogs and their future families in mind. These guidelines help ensure that each dog is placed in a safe, loving, and suitable home while preparing families for the responsibility of adoption.
We deeply appreciate your patience, understanding, and commitment to providing a forever home for one of our dogs. Thank you for supporting our mission and for being part of the effort to give these animals the second chance they deserve.
